Synopsis

Showed that the insulin-linked polymorphic region (ILPR), the minisatellite at the type 1 diabetes susceptibility locus IDDM2, is capable of transducing a transcriptional signal in pancreatic beta cells, with a long ILPR possessing greater activity than a short one. The finding is cited in the OMIM entry for type 1 diabetes mellitus 2 as the mechanistic link between the insulin VNTR and disease susceptibility.
